How to Get Started with Interlock

If you are setting up Interlock, below are FAQs and tips to help you get your license back.

What is "Interlock?"

An Ignition Interlock is a device that is installed on motor vehicles to prohibit individuals from operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. It requires your breath sample before the engine will start and you are periodically required to provide breath samples while driving. If the device detects an elevated alcohol concentration level, the vehicle will not start. Read more about what Interlock is and how it works.

How Get Started:

To set an appointment or follow your license reinstatement progress, go to https://mydmv.colorado.gov. This is where you can upload documents and get clearance from the DMV so you can get back your license.

  1. Upload the documents required by following this website https://mydmv.colorado.gov, under “Driver/ID services” follow the link that says “View/upload reinstatement documents”. This link will direct you to what is needed for your reinstatement. (The helpful tips below will have most of the necessary documents for reinstatement but only the DMV knows exactly what you will need in).

  2. Under “Appointments and Hearings” click "Schedule appointment" in the bottom center section and click the “Renew Colorado Driver License/ID/Permit” option. Make sure your appointment is one to two weeks after your installation of interlock is complete.

  3. Make sure the interlock device is professionally installed in your vehicle by a local interlock provider (ask for plenty of time, the location where the interlock device is installed needs to send a form to the DMV and this can take a week or two, make sure you set your DMV appointment one to two weeks after your device is installed). This is who we recommend https://www.intoxalock.com/colorado/?utm_campaign=180228+acquisition&,utm_source=state+admin+list&,utm_medium=website&,utm_content=state+admin+list+co+link&,utm_term=acquisition&,ixphone=8446113710/ and your other option is https://www.smartstartinc.com/colorado/

  4. Call the DMV, (303) 205-5613, to confirm your clearance is good to go 48 hours after you send in the documentation and before your appointment.
